Description
Two black straps wrap each leg below the knee, and they are the whole point of this pair. Each one winds diagonally around the leg, fastening with a buckle on the outside and a button at the back, and the loose ends swing as you walk. Underneath sits a black twill with a fine visible diagonal, cut like a proper trouser: single-button front, belt loops, buttoned welt pockets at the back. The leg tapers sharply below the knee, which makes the straps stand out all the more.
Helmut Lang defined 1990s minimalism, paring everyday clothing down while returning again and again to bondage-like straps and harnesses. Stripped-back all-black with only the restraint details left in is that DNA exactly. Quiet on the surface, with a sting underneath. Unmistakably Helmut Lang.
